How do you get an inscription from an item ? I have picked up several gold items from chest in UW such as inscibed xxxxx, but if I try to salvage the item, I never see inscription listed ?

You have to use an Expert, Superior or Perfect salvage kit to get inscriptions from an item; the regular ones won't extract them. It's also possible that you can't extract the inscription from some items at all, I think, especially high-end gold or green unique items. You can check the particular item on the wiki -- it'll usually say whether the item can be salvaged or not.

I'm using superior salvage kits... and the items were gold, so I guess these just didn't happen to be items you could pull them from. I'll keep trying, thanks.

To salvage an inscription, the item must show the word Inscription. Otherwise it is an inherent mod and cannot be salvaged.

also where the items drops matters - prophs and factions weapons are "non inscribable" and are unable to have inscriptions removed.NF and eotn weapons can have them removed and added.
An exception is the zchest drops as those can be faction or prophs weapons which can be insc ripped or added to - like a celestial axe that can be changed to 15^50 from 10^50 as example.
Using an expert salv kit is also recomended

He said "chest in UW"...I'm assuming Phantom/locked chests rather than the end chest. Regular drops and spawned chests in UW only give uninscribable items. The end chest gives inscribable items. Same for FoW, Urgoz, and the Deep.

Keep in mind that there are skins with names such as "Inscribed Staff" or "Inscribed Chakram". Those are simply the names of the skins, not an indication that the item has an inscription slot.
